Alice W. Waksmunski of Bethesda, MD and Ocean View, DE passed away peacefully on Friday, July 15, 2016 surrounded by members of her family. Alice was born on Long Island, NY on January 27, 1934 to the late Samuel and Sudie Manning Wright. She was a devoted wife of 60 years to the late John A. Waksmunski, Sr., a loving mother to John A. Waksmunski, Jr. (Elizabeth) of Leesburg, VA, Paul M. Waksmunski (Jocelyne) of Southport, NC, Linda A. Waksmunski of Bethesda, MD, Debra W. Gross (Christoph) of Ellicott City, MD, Matthew J. Waksmunski of Rockville, MD, and Lori W. Smith (Christopher) of Bethesda, MD. She is remembered with love by her grandchildren Elaine, Daniel, Blair (Rebecca), Courtney, Sarah, Jacqueline, Jessica, Julia, Nicholas, Audrey and her great grandchildren Kayla and Liam. After spending her early years on Long Island, NY and in Zebulon, NC, the family settled in Kennett Square, PA, where they operated a local restaurant. Alice worked in the family restaurant after school and on weekends, doing her homework at the lunch counter in between serving customers. During her summer vacations from school she lived with relatives in Washington, DC and worked in a ladies boutique. She graduated from Kennett High School in 1952. During one of her summers in Washington, DC, Alice met her future husband, John. They stayed in touch and exchanged letters for several years, especially while John was stationed in Korea during the war. They married in September 1953, shortly after John concluded his military service. John and Alice then made Washington, DC their home where she worked for the U.S. Department of Navy in a variety of administrative roles. She was assigned to the Polaris missile project team in its early years. In 1959, Alice left the Department of Navy in order to devote her life to raising a large family and working side by side with her husband building a successful local real estate development business. She was the financial and administrative manager for the business, facing the daily challenges of balancing the needs of six children and the family business. She and John developed numerous residential properties, including a family vacation home on Delaware's eastern shore and the two primary residences in Bethesda where they lived for almost 60 years. Alice was a dedicated mother actively involved in the lives of her six children. She served as a Cub Scout den mother, cheered at her boys' baseball and football games, and her girls' swim meets, piano recitals and choral performances. She was an avid gardener and annually planted a large vegetable garden from which the family enjoyed many delicious meals. She enjoyed camping and made annual summer trips with family to Assateague Island National Seashore. Some of her fondest memories were the camping trips the family made to New England, Canada and Florida. In her later years, she experienced the excitement of international travel and the thrill of attending performing arts productions. Alice was a devout Catholic and was actively involved in supporting Catholic charities especially sponsoring disadvantaged children.
